Layering for Warm Weather

When the temperature soars, layering might seem like the last thing on your mind. However, for fastpacking, hiking, running, or climbing, the right layers can make a world of difference for your overall comfort and performance.

Our guide to building your warm weather layering system

When the temperature soars, layering might seem like the last thing on your mind. However, for fastpacking, hiking, running, or climbing, the right layers can make a world of difference for your overall comfort and performance. Hot weather adventures demand a strategic approach to layering, focusing on breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics and lightweight protection from the elements. By choosing the right combination of base layers, wind-resistant midlayers, and protective headwear, you can stay cool, protected, and ready to tackle any challenge the weather throws your way.

T-shirt and shorts might be the go-to for hot days in the mountains, but there are still some other considerations to keep in mind, whether you’re fastpacking, hiking, running or climbing.

Breathable Base Layer

Summer calls for the lightest, most breathable base layers and the most high-performance of these can be so moisture-wicking and fast-drying that they dry almost as fast as the sweat from your body can reach them. This can also mean that they won’t have the highest protection against UV, so always make sure you apply sunscreen before heading into the sun.

Wind-resistant Midlayer

Once the sun goes down, even the warmest environments can see rapid temperature drops, and high winds can also strip away heat, so carrying a lightweight wind-resistant or windproof jacket in your pack can help you stay comfortable and warm. Look for technical, lightweight softshells, or even hybrid jackets that combine windproof material and insulation around the torso with very breathable fleece on the arms.

Clearly, one of the best ways to protect your face, eyes and scalp from the sun is by wearing a peaked cap, but look for lightweight, breathable options that can be packed flat and stashed in your bag when not in use.

Wherever your adventure takes you, preparing for the conditions by building your own lightweight layering system will see you moving fast and light through the mountains and lakes, to explore new heights, push your limits or just enjoy the moment.
